Ring: ‘3680 Kilometres’ - Graphic Image

In 2011 the global manufacture and shipment of mobile phones reached 1.6 billion, containing approximately 56 tonnes of gold worth more than £1.9 billion. Transformed into 1mm wire it would measure 3680 kilometres which is equivalent to the distance between Sheffield, UK and Cairo, Egypt. The amount of gold used to produce a decade’s worth of mobile phones represented as a 1mm wire would span the earth's circumference.

At least 40 chemical elements are commonly found in mobile phones. What are they? What do they look like? How precious are they? These rings visually represent some of them in either pure form or playfully in materials that contain them.

Element Rings - Tin (Sn 50) : Work in progress

This ring is made from pewter using a low tech casting process into cuttlefish. Pewter contains between 90-98% Tin. The other elements that make up this metal are Antimony (Sb) and Copper (Cu)

Element Rings - Gallium (Ga 31) : Work in Progress

Gallium melts at 29.76?C and it's most important use today is in semiconductor crystals. It can also be found in natural materials such as cuttlefish and pearls used in this ring.

Element Rings - Carbon (C 6), Silicon (Si 14) Tantalum (Ta 73)

Some of the rings in this series recycle other materials; the green glass which contains silicon dioxide (common white beach sand) is from a beer bottle. The Tantalum ring uses the capacitors from the Mobile phone circuit boards as if they were precious gems. Conflict Minerals or Blood Minerals, especially tantalum used in mobile phone capacitors have been cited by the UN as a major cause of the prolonged war in the Democratic Republic of Congo.

In it's pure form indium is so soft you can dent it with your fingernail, making this tension set ring somewhat ironic. However in the form of indium tin oxide used in LCD screens and monitors it is a transparent conductor of electricity that consumes hundreds of tonnes per year.
